Offering Tailored Support

At Psych Solutions NT, we offer the short term therapies program in Darwin, supporting individuals facing mild to moderate mental health challenges.

The program is designed to provide accessible therapeutic interventions for individuals grappling with mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.

We understand that these conditions can significantly impact daily life, making it challenging for individuals to function. Our interventions aim to address the unique needs of each client, offering tailored support that empowers them to navigate their mental health challenges.

Eligible clients may access up to six initial sessions, with the opportunity for an additional four sessions upon GP approval. Our commitment is assisted by funding from the Northern Territory Primary Health Network. First Nations clients can access up to 12 sessions.

Who is Eligible?

The Short-Term Therapies (STT) program offers two referral streams to address mental health needs:

1. Psychological Therapies Stream

This stream provides short-term, evidence-based therapies for individuals with mild to moderate mental health presentations who have limited access to services. To be eligible, you must:

  • Reside in the NT
  • Hold a Health Care or Pension Card (or meet hardship criteria)
  • Have a moderate non-acute mental health condition
  • Have a Mental Health Treatment Plan
  • Have Medicare eligibility

2. Suicide Prevention Stream

This stream offers immediate, intensive therapy for those with high suicide risk, and those expressing strong suicidal ideations.

Support is tailored to the individual’s readiness and preferences. The program aims to ensure accessible and timely mental health care over a period of three months.

The Referral Process

At Psych Solutions NT, we receive referrals for the STT program after the triage service (NT Connect To Wellbeing), collaborating closely with GPs and other referral sources to identify eligible individuals and connect them with the most suitable level of care.

The process begins with a GP completing a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and an STT referral form to initiate the client’s referral. Once the referral is submitted, our intake and assessment team evaluates eligibility based on the information provided in the MHTP.

Our streamlined approach helps to ensure individuals receive timely and tailored mental health support.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the short term therapies program and the better access initiatives referral pathways?

Both programs provide primary mental health care and treatment; the Better Access Initiative is Medicare-funded, whereas funding for the short term therapy program is provided by the NT Primary Health Network

The latter program is specifically targeted towards providing services to those who face difficulties in accessing services, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those experiencing homelessness, young people and those in remote and rural locations.

Referrals to short-term therapies are only for those who cannot afford to access psychological services under available Medicare initiatives such as Better Access.
